Dear Parents:

Hello!

September is here. The weather is gradually turning cooler, the osmanthus blossoms on campus are about to bloom, and the children’s figures running about during break times remain as lively as ever. It is against this backdrop that Teachers’ Day is quietly approaching—the 42nd Teachers’ Day, with the theme ‘Vigorously Fostering the Spirit of Educators, and Jointly Building a Culture of Respect for Teachers and Education’. To be honest, every year at this time, we find ourselves with mixed feelings. We are both looking forward to it and feeling a little apprehensive.

What I look forward to is feeling the affection that children and parents have for us—that sense of being appreciated really is wonderful. What makes me anxious, however, is the fear that this pure emotion might be ‘wrapped up’ in unnecessary formalities to the point of becoming too heavy.

Did you know? At SUIS-HF, there is one thing we do every day: we see the children. We see their uniqueness, we see their different paces of growth, and we see the various ways in which they communicate with us—whether through Chinese, English, drawing, music or silence. This is our understanding of ‘Developing in Harmony where East meets West’—not moulding children into a single mould, but ensuring that every talent has fertile ground in which to flourish.

And we hope that on Teachers’ Day, you too will see us—not merely as a symbol of ‘teachers’ who need to be thanked, but as a group of real people. These are the people who will be happy all day long because of a child’s sudden remark, ‘Teacher, I really like you’; who, after school, will excitedly run around the staff room sharing the news of a child’s small step forward; and who, late at night when all is quiet, will repeatedly revise their lesson plans, wondering, ‘How can I make tomorrow’s lesson a little more interesting?’

For this group of people, the ‘holiday gift’ they want most is actually quite ordinary:

If you happen to bump into a teacher whilst dropping your child off in the morning, just give them a friendly smile. The sunshine is lovely, and your smile is brighter than any flowers.

If your child comes home excited to share the latest news from school with you, please take the time to listen a little longer. Your curiosity about school is the greatest encouragement for the teachers.

If a teacher occasionally updates you on your child’s progress—even if it isn’t all ‘good news’—please be assured that it stems from genuine concern. No teacher would take the time to ‘tell on’ your child; they simply want to work with you to help your child overcome a minor hurdle.

If your child has clumsily drawn a greeting card and scribbled a few lines of text, please bring it over for them. It is far more precious than any exquisite gift you might find in the shops.

We don’t need a commemorative banner—that would be too much of a fuss. Nor do we need a banquet; let’s save that time for our families. And we certainly don’t need gifts or flowers, because the children’s smiles are beautiful enough on their own.

What is it that we are looking for? It is trust.

The word ‘trust’ carries great weight. For it implies that, whilst we guide our children into the world, we do so with a sense of peace of mind. You trust us, we trust the children, and the children trust the world—it is within this chain of trust that education truly takes place.

At SUIS-HF, we often say: ‘Let children be children.’ This may sound simple, but putting it into practice requires a great deal of mutual understanding amongst many people. We need you to stand alongside us—not as someone we are ‘grateful to’, but as a ‘partner on this journey’. You are not merely a ‘recipient of our services’; you are a partner in the endeavour of education. Our love for the children is directed towards the same goal.

Finally, there is something I’ve always wanted to say to you, but have rarely said formally: thank you for entrusting your most precious treasure to our care. Every day, we strive to prove ourselves worthy of this trust.

Happy holidays—not just on Teachers’ Day, but on every ordinary day.
