近日，包河区第五届中学生英语单词素养大赛圆满落幕。我校八年级学子在与全区38支队伍的同台交流中，展现了卓越的英语核心素养，最终斩获一等奖。这不仅是一份荣誉，更是对包河协和双语学校“融合中西 和谐发展”教育理念和英语教学实践的最好注脚。

The 5th Baohe District Secondary School English Vocabulary Proficiency Competition recently came to a successful conclusion. Competing against 38 teams from across the district, our S8 pupils demonstrated outstanding core English language proficiency and ultimately secured first prize. This is not only an honour, but also the finest testament to SUIS Hefei Campus’s educational philosophy of ‘Developing in Harmony where East meets West’ and its English teaching practices.

好成绩的背后，是严谨的规划与扎实的日常。自大赛启动以来，我校英语教研组迅速响应，将此次大赛作为检验和提升学生“英语核心素养”的重要契机。

Behind these excellent results lie meticulous planning and diligent daily practice. Since the competition began, our school’s English teaching team has responded swiftly, treating this event as a key opportunity to assess and enhance our students’ ‘core English literacy’.

与传统的选拔不同，我们采取了“全员浸润——海选突围——闭卷初赛”的梯队选拔模式。备赛过程中，老师们坚决打破“单词学习=死记硬背”的刻板印象，将词汇语用情景化，尝试不同类型且充满趣味的英语单词活动，最终引导孩子将单词记忆与阅读、写作深度结合，真正实现“学以致用”。

Unlike traditional selection processes, we have adopted a tiered selection model comprising ‘total immersion – open auditions – closed-book preliminary rounds’. During the preparation process, the teachers resolutely broke away from the stereotype that ‘learning vocabulary equals rote memorisation’. Instead, they contextualised vocabulary usage and introduced a variety of engaging English vocabulary activities. Ultimately, they guided the children to integrate vocabulary memorisation deeply with reading and writing, thereby truly putting their learning into practice.

为帮助学生适应比赛节奏，教研组赛前带学生们熟悉赛制流程，并融入心理辅导，让孩子们卸下包袱，自信快乐应战。

To help the pupils adjust to the pace of the competition, the teaching team familiarised them with the competition format and procedures beforehand, whilst also providing psychological support to help them let go of any pressure and approach the event with confidence and enthusiasm.

 

决战巅峰：38强争霸，展协和学子锋芒

区级决赛现场，面对多轮竞技考验和38支强队的同台竞技，协和学子毫不怯场。从个人的车轮战图文猜词、熟词生义，到语境填词，再到小组合作的纵横填字谜，他们沉着冷静、落笔生花、配合默契，充分展现了卓越的语言逻辑与跨文化理解力。

At the district-level finals, faced with multiple rounds of competition and 38 strong teams vying for the title, the students from SUIS-HF showed no signs of nerves. From individual challenges such as picture-and-text word guessing and identifying unfamiliar meanings of familiar words, to context-based word completion, and on to the group crossword they remained composed and calm, wrote with flair, and worked together seamlessly, fully demonstrating their exceptional linguistic logic and cross-cultural understanding.

更重要的是，赛场上的他们自信大方、从容不迫，尽显风采。这种超越单纯应试的综合素养，正是协和双语学子独有的“名片”。

More importantly, on the competition stage, they displayed confidence, poise and composure, showcasing their very best. This well-rounded quality, which goes beyond mere exam performance, is precisely the hallmark of SUIS-HF students.

 

专家引领：肯定蜕变，赋予语言内驱力

Expert Guidance: Celebrating Transformation and Fostering Intrinsic Motivation in Language Learning

 

赛后，包河区教研员石眉主任对参赛学子们给予了高度评价与温暖寄语。石主任动情地说：

After the competition, Director Ms. Shi Mei, the Baohe District curriculum advisor, spoke highly of the participating students and offered them some warm words of encouragement. Director Ms. Shi said emotionally:

“同学们，你们是从全区1万多名中学生中，通过初赛笔试层层筛选出来的优秀学子！今天坐在比赛现场的这100多个孩子，每一个都是那么优秀、那么可爱。无论最终的比赛结果怎样，站在这个舞台上的你们就已经赢了，因为你们突破了自我，正在努力地‘玩转’英语词汇！”

“Ladies and gentlemen, you are outstanding students who have been selected through a rigorous process of preliminary written tests from over 10,000 secondary school pupils across the region! Each and every one of the more than 100 children sitting here today is so talented and so delightful. Whatever the final outcome of the competition, simply by standing on this stage, you have already won—because you have surpassed your own limits and are working hard to ‘master’ English vocabulary!”

这份充满力量的肯定，不仅是对孩子们前期备战的最高奖赏，更彻底卸下了他们心中的包袱。石主任指出，作为新教材使用后的首届大赛，本次赛制更具综合性与挑战性，初衷正是希望孩子们能深度感知英语词汇的灵活多变，让学英语变得更有意义，真正唤醒学习的内驱力。

This powerful affirmation was not only the greatest reward for the children’s hard work in the run-up to the competition, but also lifted a huge weight off their shoulders. Director Ms. Shi pointed out that, as the first competition held since the introduction of the new curriculum, this year’s format was more comprehensive and challenging; the original intention was precisely to enable the children to gain a deeper understanding of the flexibility and versatility of English vocabulary, making the study of English more meaningful and truly awakening their intrinsic motivation to learn.

这番话深深触动了在场的协和学子，让他们更加坚定了学好英语的信念。

These words deeply moved the students from SUIS-HF present, strengthening their resolve to master the English language.

带着这份温暖的鼓舞与启发，比赛结束后，我校参赛学子主动围聚在初中英语组老师们身边，难掩激动地分享了自己的心得体会：

“这次的比赛紧张刺激又充满乐趣。个人答题时有过绞尽脑汁的纠结，但在团队协作成功解开纵横字谜的那一刻，成就感简直拉满！走下赛场，我也清醒地意识到自己的不足。虽然总体感觉难度不大，但失分往往就藏在细节里，平时的英语学习还需要得更扎实。就像老师们常说的，学习从来不是一蹴而就的。这次见识到许多英语水平超群的选手，我从他们身上深深感受到了对英语的纯粹热爱与认真专注。未来，我不仅要自己多多钻研，更要把这份热情与力量，传递给周围的每一个小伙伴！”

“This competition was both nerve-wracking and thoroughly enjoyable. I found myself racking my brains over the individual questions, but the sense of achievement was absolutely immense the moment we successfully solved the crossword as a team! Stepping off the stage, I became acutely aware of my own shortcomings. Although the overall difficulty didn’t seem too high, the points I lost were often down to the finer details, so I need to make my English studies even more thorough in future. As our teachers often say, learning is never an overnight process. Having witnessed so many contestants with exceptional English skills, I was deeply moved by their genuine passion for the language and their dedication. In the future, I intend not only to study hard myself, but also to pass on this enthusiasm and drive to every friend around me!”

“从一万多名初赛选手中突围，站上区赛决赛的舞台，这个过程本身就很酷。拿到一等奖是巨大的惊喜，但更让我开心的是，我找到了持续探索英语世界的那把钥匙。我一直很喜欢记单词，尤其偏爱那些有挑战性的高难度词汇。但通过这次比赛，我有了更深的领悟：真正的掌握单词，不能只停留在表面，更要到语境中去细致体会。去感知词汇的灵活多变，真正吃透“一词多义”和“熟词生义“。这次比赛让我看到了自己提升的空间，未来我会继续努力，做一个懂方法、更自信的英语学习者！”

‘Making it through from over 10,000 preliminary contestants to reach the district final stage was a brilliant experience in itself. Winning first prize was a huge surprise, but what made me even happier was that I’d found the key to continuing my exploration of the English language. I’ve always enjoyed learning vocabulary, with a particular fondness for challenging, high-level words. However, through this competition, I’ve gained a deeper insight: to truly master vocabulary, one must not merely scratch the surface, but delve into the context to appreciate it in detail. One must perceive the flexibility and versatility of words, and truly grasp the concepts of ‘polysemy’ and ‘familiar words with unfamiliar meanings’. This competition has shown me where I can improve, and in the future I will continue to work hard to become a more methodical and confident English learner!”

“在这次比赛的准备过程中，我系统地学习了词义辨析和英英释义，在老师们的指导和帮助下，以新的角度重新梳理了所学内容，因此收获颇多。生命是一颗长满可能的树，我想我不会再失去发芽的勇气。从踏入赛场的那一刻起，我就告诉自己，无论结果如何，来了就要全力以赴。相信这次比赛经历也会给我提供新的学习视角，我会把积累的经验分享给同学们，真正把英语用在生活中，而不仅仅是死记硬背应付考试。人生艳丽，未来更值得期待！”

“Whilst preparing for this competition, I systematically studied lexical differentiation and English-English definitions. With the guidance and support of my teachers, I revisited the material from a fresh perspective, which proved immensely rewarding. Life is a tree brimming with possibilities, and I believe I will never again lose the courage to sprout anew. From the moment I stepped onto the competition stage, I told myself that, whatever the outcome, I would give it my all. I am confident that this experience will provide me with fresh perspectives on learning. I intend to share the lessons I have learnt with my classmates, so that we can truly apply English in our daily lives, rather than merely memorising facts to pass exams. Life is vibrant, and the future holds even greater promise!”

“这次词汇大赛让我深入体会了词义辨析和英英释义的学习方法，在老师们的指导和帮助下，以新的视角对所学内容进行了梳理，收获满满。勇气和自信一旦拥有便不会再失去。可跨溪一条，便可探汪洋千米。不得不说比赛真的很好玩。我会把这次准备过程中积累的经验分享给同学们，真正把英语用在生活中，而不仅仅是死记硬背应付考试。老师给了我们很多鼓励和信心，我也对自己的未来有了更坚定的目标和追求！”

“This vocabulary competition gave me a deep insight into how to distinguish between word meanings and study English-English definitions. With the guidance and support of my teachers, I was able to review what I’d learnt from a fresh perspective and gained a great deal. Once you’ve found courage and confidence, you’ll never lose them. Just as crossing a stream allows you to explore the vast ocean, I must say the competition was truly great fun. I will share the experience I’ve gained during this preparation process with my classmates, so that we can truly apply English in our daily lives, rather than merely cramming for exams. Our teachers have given us so much encouragement and confidence, and I now have a much clearer sense of purpose and ambition for my future!”

We do not teach vocabulary for its own sake, but rather view it as a key to unlocking the world, fostering lifelong learners who possess a deep connection to their Chinese heritage and a global perspective.

区级一等奖是里程碑，更是新起点。未来，我校将继续深耕双语教学，以赛促学、以赛促教，为孩子们提供更广阔的舞台，让每一粒种子在协和的沃土上，向下扎根，向上生长！

Winning the first prize at district level marks a milestone, but it is also a new beginning. Moving forward, our school will continue to focus on bilingual education, using competitions to enhance both learning and teaching, and providing our pupils with a broader platform. We aim to ensure that every seed takes root and flourishes in the fertile soil of SUIS-HF!
