Every aspiring student dreams of entering the world’s top universities. On the afternoon of November 29th, our school had the privilege of welcoming Dr. Martin Vestergaard from the University of Cambridge. He shared insights into Cambridge’s academic excellence and demystified critical thinking, delivering a captivating lecture titled “The Application of Critical Thinking in Teaching and Learning, and Tips for Written and Oral Exams at the University of Cambridge.”

剑桥大学沃尔森学院生理、发展和神经科学学系教授、计算神经科学家。Martin教授致力于决策心理学和沟通的认知和经济结构之间的理论和功能关系方面的研究,对竞争言语的知觉和认知分离、听觉大小感知和听觉功能的其他认知方面感兴趣,利用心理物理实验、计算模型和大脑成像技术来识别奖赏处理和听觉专门化的行为和神经指标,相关研究成果被CNN、《连线》《商业标准》《科学时报》《福布斯》等主流媒体相继报道。

Dr. Martin Vestergaard is a Professor in the Department of Physiology, Development, and Neuroscience at Wolfson College, University of Cambridge. As a computational neuroscientist, his research focuses on decision-making psychology and the cognitive-economic structure of communication. His interests include competitive speech perception, cognitive differentiation, and auditory perception, employing psychophysical experiments, computational models, and brain imaging to identify behavioral and neural markers of reward processing and auditory specialization. His work has been featured by CNN, Wired, Business Standard, Science Times, and Forbes.

活动开场之际,Martin 教授由 “什么是好学生” 这一问题开启引导之旅。他指出,好学生除需具备努力、自律、擅于思考等素养外,最为关键的是要拥有批判性思维。Martin 教授列举了诸多饶有趣味且极具启发性的实例,诸如 “在不断笔的情形下,用四条直线连接 9 个点;沙井用圆盖适宜还是方盖更优;四条腿的桌椅与 3 条腿的桌椅相较哪种更好” 等,激励同学们积极踊跃地提出多元的见解与解决方案,引导他们深入领悟批判性思维的魅力。

Dr. Vestergaard opened the session by asking, “What makes a good student?” He emphasized that beyond effort, self-discipline, and thoughtful analysis, the most crucial trait is critical thinking.He illustrated this concept with engaging examples, such as connecting nine dots with four straight lines without lifting the pen, choosing between round or square manhole covers, and comparing the stability of four-legged versus three-legged tables. These thought experiments encouraged students to explore multiple perspectives and sharpen their critical thinking skills.

Dr. Vestergaard highlighted the core principles of critical thinking and demonstrated its practical applications in learning and everyday life. He stressed that critical thinking is not just a key to academic success but an essential skill for enhancing personal cognitive development.

The University of Cambridge, a globally renowned academic institution, ranks among the top in various authoritative lists. Its rigorous admission standards and intense competition make it both an aspiration and a challenge for many students. During the session, Dr. Vestergaard detailed Cambridge’s rich history and unique collegiate system. He encouraged students to set ambitious goals and strive for self-improvement in their academic journeys.

He emphasized the importance of not merely absorbing knowledge but also developing the ability to articulate ideas clearly and systematically under time constraints. He advocated using critical thinking to analyze problems deeply and from multiple perspectives, fostering a comprehensive understanding.
