Chinese poetry, through the millennia, is transformed into the most beautiful language in the heart. Reading, making every day a poem, every day a chapter. Every time we read, it is a photosynthesis of body and mind, taking us to discover a better landscape. In spring, SUIS HF students invite you and me to read a good book together, and in reading, discover the world.

“I will ride on a horse that flies, spinning at the end of water and sky, stumbling over a calm lake, stirring up two waves of water walls; I will ride on a horse that flies, gliding over the cliffs of time and space, gently passing through the dark forest and landing at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.” Alice Yao and Anne Shen took us on a magical journey through Harry Potter in the form of reading a book together. The book’s wild imagination and perilous plots allow us to witness the magic and at the same time convey the power of love and courage.

“What does the world really look like?” From a unique perspective, Emily Fang shares her insights after reading Genius on the Left, Madman on the Right: “As we journey through life, we are always asking ourselves and the world, and most of us, we follow the rules and accept what fate gives us. As we grow up, we stop asking, and these people the author writes about are often too paranoid. They zoom in on the smallest things and look at the world through their eyes. It is a book that gives a real insight into the inner workings of a madman or a genius. It allows us to see the world differently with a different perspective, and shows us to understand other people’s worlds and to tolerate different points of view. Of course, we still have to have our own ideas and thoughts and have our own world in our mind, and that’s what matters most!”

A book is like a ship that leads us from the narrow confines of the world to the infinite expanse of life’s oceans. Dreams, always repeated in poetry and in the quotations of young people, are occasionally mocked by the sarcastic. Youth needs dreams to reward life, but what can be used to resist being hit by dreams when youth is no longer an age? In book The Moon and Sixpence, Angel Meng finds the answer for us: the ground is full of sixpence, but he looks up and sees the moon, and everyone should live their own life.

Secondary School Book Sharing Session

The four student representatives’ sharing convinced us that reading makes the world a better place; reading allows you to look up at the stars even if you are deep in the mud. The next game – Knowing How Many Famous Books, was an eye-opener. Students actively answered the questions and roamed in the world of a book, and the participation of teachers on site brought the activity to a climax.

At the end of the event, Principal Wendy Yu said to the students of SUIS HF: “The fragrance of books can bring us far, like a breeze over the night sea, reading brings us deep peace and solace. When we take literature as our bones and poetry as our spirit, we will gain a full and light soul. When the book is lightly opened, the starry river of wisdom, the light clouds of true love, the moon tinged with nostalgia and the rain entwined with parting thoughts all emerge slowly, sending you and me to an eternal sky. As the day grows longer and the wind warms up, spring is the time to read, and young people are the time to read.
