Understanding and learning about Dunhuang art is conducive to deepening the knowledge of Chinese traditional culture, enhancing patriotic feelings, promoting national aesthetics, and cultivating cultural self-confidence.

The dome rises like an umbrella, like a cover, like a bucket, hanging from the ceiling of the interior. This is the Mojing. Through independent inquiry and learning, the third-grade students walked into the grotto and carefully felt the beauty of the firmament. They formed teams and carried out creative practices for different era styles, and the strokes were full of charm.

Mural art is the largest treasure trove of Dunhuang Grottoes, as the most precious artistic crystallisation in Chinese culture’s treasure house, perfectly reflecting the interpretation of artistic sensory aesthetics in ancient Chinese traditional culture. Grade 4 students use the art form of clay tablet painting, copying the ancients’ methods and creating their own style.

Since ancient times, paper-cutting art has carried people’s imagination of a better life. Chinese paper-cutting art has a complete art system, among which coloured sticker paper-cutting and monochrome paper-cutting are particularly prominent.

Grandma Ku Shulan is the master of Xunyi coloured sticker paper-cutting and is affectionately known as the “flower-cutting lady.” Following in her footsteps, the second-grade students worked in groups to design a group of colourful rabbits using scissors with exquisite patterns and lively colours so that this group of rabbits was vividly displayed in front of our eyes.

Sanxingdui makes people impressed with the wisdom of the Shu people thousands of years ago. They are also impressed by their fierce modelling ability, especially those skeletal, clear, bold, exaggerated portraits, giving people a strong visual impact. But there is no doubt that Sanxingdui must be an integral part of Chinese civilisation. Let’s enjoy the unique Sanxingdui paper faces cut by the scissors of sixth graders.

The door is one of the most important components of ancient Chinese architecture; it is not only a passage for people to enter and exit but also one of the symbols of architectural hierarchy. The door decoration of Chinese residential buildings has a solid cultural colour in its decorative art, implying the ancient and profound characteristics of Chinese traditional culture, which has a strong appeal to people and is an architectural and artistic heritage rich in traditional Chinese cultural value.

The 5th graders used the form of painting to guide us through the characteristics of different door decoration styles, which was very exciting.

True love of life and saving water are the beautiful yearnings in children’s hearts. The first-grade students outline the water world in their hearts with vivid colours. In the children’s paintings, tiny water droplets from a microscopic perspective take us into another magical world. With “small” water drops, we are seeing the “big” world. It lets aesthetic education infiltrate children’s hearts like water droplets and gives birth to a pair of eyes that discover the beauty and a spirit that creates beauty.

Art exhibitions provide a platform for students’ artworks and allow students to experience the beauty and feel beauty in the process of appreciation. As Mr Zhu Guangqian said in “Talking about Beauty”: “Go slowly and appreciate!” “Concordia students must not only know how to appreciate the beauty created by themselves but also learn to appreciate the beauty created by others. The world will be more colourful when art remains diverse!”
